Lose Weight with Changes

As you may or may not know I'm a virgin.  Yep, a dieting virgin that is still wet behind the ears.  I just had my  one month anniversary.  So what do I know?  Not much!!!  I freely admit it.  But, recently I am noticing some changes.  For example, when I first started eating smaller portions, it was commented on by my whole family.  Not in a mean way mind you , but it was something out of the ordinary so it was a topic of conversation.  Now, not so much.  And, as for me, I am becoming accustomed to the changes in my eating habit.  So much so, that this new smaller portion habit is starting to feel more like "me" than pigging out.  To me this is a very exciting change!!!  I don't feel hungry, I just feel "normal".  Now I know that I could fall off the wagon at any time.  I definitely do not want to tempt fate.   And yes,  I am well aware that pride cometh before a fall and a million other little warning phrases.   But, right now it doesnt feel like I am doing anything but being me.  I think this is mainly due to the fact that I am eating what I want to eat.  Basically, I am eating the same foods and dishes that I ate before starting this weight loss journey.  You name it, Chinese, spaghetti, cereal,  I'm eating them.  I am just eating way less of them. One bowl period.  Plus a lot of fruit.  Simple?  Yes, but it is working (albeit slowly) so far.  I like these changes.  They feel like lifestyle changes.  And, they feel good...

  1. I can't tell you how much I agree with you. I just wrote my own blog post where I talk about this same kind of thing. It is difficult to wait for true hunger, eat small amounts, and then wait for true hunger again but I really feel that in the long run this is the way to go. It is a lifestyle change but one I feel will work over time. The weight loss may be slower but it will be permanent. The scale will tell us if we need to tweak things.

  2. That's great, Paul! You will love all of the little changes you experience along this journey. I remember how exciting it felt when I could comfortably cross my legs for the first time in years (I have short, chubby legs ). Also, the thrill I had last fall when I could fit into the center airline seat without touching the passengers on either side of me. And yes, like you, smaller meals became my normal. Tonight I ate a little larger meal than usual -- not much more -- and I am quite uncomfortable....won't do that again soon.

  4. @marsial2010 Yes a small meal is all I need now. Tonight I had a can of soup and a salad and am stuffed. The old me would have been looking around for the next coarse!!! Changes...positive changes indeed.

  5. It's the little changes that sometimes bring about big results. You just have to take one step at a time.

  6. Hey Paul, just to let you know that I have been here but haven't been able to comment due to some blogger issues w/ my blog - but I *think* it's been figured out...CONGRATS on a great job! Somehow being a "weight-loss virgin" helps this battle because you don't have the background of past failures haunting you - so enjoy it! I've learned that a lot about this journey is about the why's of why we've overeaten - and what's eating us rather than what we've actually eaten. Or that's what it is for me anyway!

  7. @Dawn Wow that is really insightful. I do believe you are absolutely right. This journey seems to be every bit as much mental as it is physical. To explore the why's of why we've overeaten would make for an interesting post. Thank you!

  8. Noticing these changes within yourself is the best motivation to keep going that there is, Paul. For being a newbie, you're doing pretty fantastic; and don't forget - we've ALL been there. Some got to goal faster than the speed of light; then there were others, like me, who took the slow and steady route. Either way, making habits as you go along that will carry you a lifetime really is what it's all about. So glad you're here with us, Paul. A man's perspective weighs pretty heavily around here among we mostly female bloggers. Keep up the good work!!

  10. I can totally relate to your post, Paul. I continued to eat what I liked but just made sure I ate the right amount of food to make me feel satisfied rather than full. Even now, a year on, I still continue to eat pizza, chips (fries) and other unhealthy foods but make sure I have a sensible portion and also combine it with healthier options too i.e. salad/veg and try and have a good balance.
