Low Carb Cooking For a Happy Marriage...

For a happy marriage, I think each spouse must be willing to make concessions.  Now don't worry, I am not changing this blog into "Paul's Martial Advise" anytime soon.  However, I thought I would share an example from today, and I might even put a little weight loss spin on it.

The wife and I are both trying to lose weight.  We are trying to cut down on carbs.  Please understand before I get a bunch of hate mail, we are cutting down...not even low-carb, just trying to save a few carbs here and there when we can.  So when she saw I was making a roast she made a comment about not adding potatoes.  Now this is where things could have got ugly.  She was hitting me where it hurts--the stomach.  All my life with a roast, I have had potatoes.  I am just a simple meat and potatoes kind of guy.  Well, did I argue with her?  Did I try to explain to her that life is short and we have to enjoy the little things like potatoes?  Nope, I did smart thing.  I just smiled at her and said, "Don't worry, dear, I'm not putting in any potatoes".  Hey, after all, Valentines is right around the corner and I may be fat, but I not stupid. ;-)  What are you giving up that you really miss??  I would really love to hear from you!!  Here I am cooking it--with no potatoes!

  1. Lunches out and real fountain Pepsi.... Not cold turkey mind you but still a noticeable difference. And dessert every night... that one really hurts.

A roast without potatoes???? I would miss them too; I would rather have left the roast out and just eaten the potatoes. :)

  2. I have found I don't miss carbs after leaving them alone pretty much for some time. There are great mashed "potatoes" recipes that use cauliflower rather than potatoes. You might check those out. I have made a great "potato" salad using cauliflower rather than potatoes. It was very good. It is a small thing to give up potatoes if we keep the bigger picture in mind (or maybe I should say "smaller" picture). Take care and good job.

  4. That's one of the things I'm struggling with with Mr. Sandra. When I make a roast, or anything for that matter, he needs/wants his potatoes or rice. I do make them for him and I don't eat them, but I really want him to start eating healthier. It isn't so much the potatoes/rice that are the issue as much as it is what he puts on them (butter, sour cream, soy sauce (and lots of it)).

Since I am currently doing Jenny Craig, I can honestly say right now I am missing "real" food. I am tired of packaged food. I love veggies and am getting plenty of those... but JC includes some carby stuff I normally wouldn't have eaten before (like potatoes, French toast, pancakes ... blah).

I also miss the not so healthy for you stuff like my Old Dutch Arriba's and beer.

    1. You know, Sandra, I feel your pain. There is not much you can do. IMHO, the person has to want to make the change for themselves. I am guilty of the soy myself!!

I couldn't give up the real food for packages. I am glad you are willing to! You have a lot of willpower. I am just trying to lose with smaller portions.

  5. The thing I gave up but miss the most? Bagels or white breads like french bread hot out of the oven. I just don't do it anymore as I can't control myself around it! Fresh white stuff is my "crack" of choice ;-)

    1. OMG, yes bread, bread, bread. I haven't had any white bread for months and yeah it is hard. I cannot just eat one slice. If I start, I will eat almost the whole loaf! for real!! Thanks for the comment!!!

  6. The thing is, you only have to cut down on these things for a short time to get to where you want to be. Hope you enjoyed the roast!

  7. Did you miss the potatoes? I am not a carb counter but I try to keep them low. I limit potatoes to once a week or so. I like red potatoes roasted with carrots and onions and dill. You did good :).

    1. You know, I probably missed them more out of habit, I guess. It was fine. In the big picture, I have abused food for many years and now I have to pay. I have to do without some things and try to get healthy-and I'm OK with that. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I think I would find a roast without potatoes hard too. I love my carbs too but I have cut down on the amount I have now, I always weigh out my carbs. I make roast potatoes and roast veg without any oil or fat now and they still taste good. Or maybe you could boil the potatoes or mash them without any butter or milk instead of roasting them with fat to save on calories. Have you thought about trying some butternut squash or sweet potatoes with your roasts as I'm pretty sure they are lower in fat than white potatoes.

    1. I love sweet potatoes! My wife is trying to lower carbs and I have no clue if sweet potatoes are lower carb or not. I will look it up. Squash is a good idea too. I am going to buy some cauliflower and will try fake potatoes with that too.

  9. Still looks really yummy!! The thing I miss most is ice cream!! I used to have a 3 scoop sundae with hot fudge every week. It's been over 2 years since I had one. Sigh!

    Keep focused!!
