Weight Loss and Willpower

Do you have willpower?  When it comes to sweets, I don't.  Nope, none, zero.  I just cannot do it.  I cannot resist.  Once I have even the smallest bite, I'm done for.  Look out!  Stand back!  I gotta have it!

Here's what happened:  My daughter is slim.  Yep, believe it.  She is 14 and is skinny.  She also likes sweets and can eat them and doesn't gain.  I know- not fair, right?  So once in a while I will make her favorite dessert for her- chocolate cake from scratch with chocolate frosting from scratch.  Of coarse being the cook I am always curious as to how the cake turned out.  This is where I get in trouble.  I tell myself I will just have a tiny bite.  Just to try it.  In the back of my mind I know how this is going to end.  As they say, I've seen this movie before.  But, I DON"T CARE!  I mean on one hand I do-I want to lose weight, but in that second, I just want a bite.  I am just like a drug addict or alcoholic that has been clean and sober for some time.   If he tries just a sip, he falls of the wagon.   It is so embarrassing, but I can do some serious damage to that cake.  Once I have that one tiny bite my resistance is gone and I can't help myself.

So, there is no real message here other than if you are like me don't want to splurge, you better not even be near that cake.  Don't be where you can see it.  Don't be where you can smell it.  For me, that stuff is like poison, but I just can't help myself.  Do you have willpower?  What are your triggers?

  1. oh i know what you mean!! its hard enough to say "no" when i SEE it, but to have the TASTE of it in my mouth AND to see it....and still tasting how delicious it is....no way. i lose control.

  2. Well, you know my sad tale when it comes to CAKE. Yes, CAKE is always in capitol letters for me. :{

I can eat chocolate and stop at one serving. I feel some some "Hmmm. That was good; I like some more." But I can resist it. Same ting with ice cream-which is really the food that I ate every night and is the major reason for this extra weight. I can have one bowl and not follow that with a trip into gluttony.

CAKE? Nope. Never. Not one time have I had a gluten/fat/sugar combo and followed it by staying on plan. You'd think that since I can actually make that statement--I'd quit trying to have just one small slice of CAKE. You'd think.

    March on.

  3. Tasting a trigger food is not an option for me if I want to stay on track. They're usually not allowed in my house at all but if my daughter wants to have one around, it stays in her room. I can't handle one bite of ice cream or candy. I'm actually improving on peanut butter because the kind I have in the house is just not as good as the super chunky kind I love. It helps that I don't bake.

The good thing is that you realize all this and can use it to your advantage. Good luck.

    1. I have to force myself to eat peanut butter! Just don't care for it in any form. But the protein is good for me since I don't eat meat.

  4. I too have that issue with a lot of things. I can say no after a few bites but then I have to walk away & occupy my mind with something else otherwise I'll eat it until it's gone! Even after walking away the voices will nag that they want more and that it's not far if I can only help them get to it... LOL! Yeah, willpower is something you have to work on and eventually it gets stronger, it really just depends on the amount of work you put into it I guess. It's really different for everyone but there are things where I will not even take a bite because I know then I will be putting my willpower to the test and it's a test I don't want to do poorly on:-)

  6. Spaghetti is my trigger food. I LOVE IT! If I make it I want it ALL!! That night. Ice cream is also something that is an out of the house treat. If I know it is in the freezer, it is all I can think about :)

  7. Potato chips. In all their lovely crispy, salty goodness, dancing on my tongue. So wonderful.

But, like you said, I'm an addict. I cannot, just cannot eat just one. Therefore, I don't. The answer is no, and will probably be always no.

Like an alcoholic who cannot have that one sip of wine, I cannot have the one potato chip.

Can i live the rest of my life like this? Yes, yes I can.

  8. I have to avoid my trigger foods entirely. I'm not one of those people who can keep a container of something and ration it out - the most relevant comparison I've heard was from a former binge eater and alcoholic, who said that "one is too many and a thousand is never enough."

  9. There are certain things I just cannot have in my house or it will trigger a binge for me. Most of these foods are high in sugar!
So my husband and I have made a pact together neither of us will bring anything in the house that may trigger the other person to binge. So far so good.
What I have done this week is to buy some new containers and when I go grocery shopping I fill half the containers with a mix of veggies and the other half with a mix of fruits. When we need to snack we just go to the fridge and pull out a container! Works for us :)

  10. That's me to a tee. It is like a drug. I can't have it. And if I even smell it I am probably in trouble!! I can't tell you how many diets I went off and all of them were due to me taking "just one bite" of a trigger food!!

  11. When it comes to sweets, especially chocolate, I have no willpower! If sweets are in the house it's all I can think about it, and I will eat it - all of it! My brain does not give me the option of just having one little bite and moving on - I'm just not there yet....maybe I never will be. :( So, I do my best to not have any kind of sweets in my house.

    1. Yep, to my brain there is no little bit. Not an option.

  12. I am NOT at all a cake person but I love cooking especially for the kids so chocolate cake is at least once every 2 weeks. Yes, it is an almost impossible task for a cook not to try their goods. I struggle with cheese and pasta, a little is never enough so I cut both out of my diet entirely and when I don't eat them I'm fine but a little can easily turn into a binge.

  13. oh and I forgot, a jar of Nutella in the cupboard is lethal. It's one of those foods you can easily just eat a teaspoon of - every time you go to the cupboard.

    1. LOL, I have heard of Nutella before but have never tried it. Is it like peanut butter?? I should try some--or knowing my lack of willpower maybe shouldn't?

    2. It's more like a chocolate spread. Made of hazelnut and cocoa. Delicious, don't try it - It's addictive :)

    3. Chocolate spread! OMG, that would be right up my alley! You are right, I better stay away from it!!

  14. I have improved my willpower, but the easiest thing is just to avoid these settings. That's easier for me!

  15. I call those foods red light foods. I can not have certain things in the house. Sweet and anything salty mostly. I can avoid them for a long time but when the feeling comes watch out!

    1. Exactly, I can resist and resist and resist - until I can't LOL--watch out for sure!
